The controversial mass killing of chicks using shredding techniques is going to be banned by France. The ban would be complete by the end of 2021. The male chicks are termed unproductive and then shredded subsequently.
The method was termed inhumane and the researches are working on techniques to determine the sex of the chick while still in the egg. Other inhumane methods practiced by farmers include suffocating the chicks to death or gassing them.
The agriculture minister of France, Didier Guillame, while announcing the ban quoted “Nothing will be like it was before, we want to move forward, there’s no going back. The government is committed to it. The aim is to oblige firms to do this by the end of 2021. We need to find a method that works on a large scale.”
