The US-Mexican border spans 2,000 miles. And, in an era where politics are as polarized and divisive as Trump’s proposal on building a physical border, new ideas are on the horizon.
According to the Trump administration, the border wall is very important. After all, it’s going to divert illegal drug smuggling and immigrants from entering the country. The administration has labeled ‘unchecked immigration’ as a national security risk that needs to be addressed at all costs. Critics, on the other hand, claim the wall is a highly ineffective, misdirected, wildly expensive process. They say the actual crisis, which has worsened due to Trump’s restricted immigration policy, is humanitarian. It’s about refugees seeking lawful entry to flee the poverty and violence of their country and live a better life in the States.
But, it looks like another border wall is going to take place of the proposed one. One that costs less, is less disruptive and less controversial on the political front- a “smart wall.” Yes, by using technologies like Drones, Sensors and AI, smart walls will be a future border wall. It will be an ocean-to-ocean technological barrier that will help in identifying unauthorized border crossing. Especially the remote stretches between the established entry ports.
The idea is already backed by key politicians which include prominent political people like the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; Reps. Will Hurd (R-TX), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA); and Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT).
Henry Cuellar says we have challenges in the 21st century. Therefore, it’s better to use 21st century solutions rather than 14th century solutions as a wall. He also said even if a fence is put up the ‘bad guys’ can use drones to smuggle drugs over the fence or wall, so we need to be more agile than them.
